Execution
- 1Throw the jab, retracting to guard immediately

- 3Drive through the bag on both punches, don't just tap it
- 4Reset stance and repeat
- 5Move around the bag between combo sets rather than staying planted
Key cues
- Jab snaps, cross drives
- Both punches return to guard immediately
- Turn the rear heel on the cross
- Stay balanced — don't lunge into the bag
- Exhale on both punches
Common faults
- Throwing the cross before the jab fully retracts
- No hip rotation on the cross
- Standing too close and crowding the bag
- Losing guard position after the combo
- Static feet the entire round instead of moving
Tweaks
- Add lateral movement between reps
- Increase punch speed while maintaining form
- Progress into 1-2-3 once grooved
Progressions
Muscles
Primary: Shoulders, Obliques
Secondary: Core, Triceps
Notes
USA Boxing's training manual explicitly recommends starting new boxers with basic left/right combinations before adding complexity.
