Contraindications

Stand at jab range from the bag, lead foot slightly closer, hands up.
Execution
- 1Step slightly forward with the lead foot as the jab extends, if range requires it
- 2Rotate the fist palm-down at full extension, striking with the first two knuckles
- 3Retract the hand immediately along the same line it traveled out
- 4Keep the rear hand glued to the cheek throughout
- 5Reset stance between reps
Key cues
- Snap it out and snap it back
- Rotate the fist just before impact
- Keep the shoulder up to protect the chin as you jab
- Step with the punch if closing distance
- Stay relaxed until the moment of impact
Common faults
- Pushing the jab instead of snapping it
- Dropping the rear guard hand
- Overreaching and leaning the head forward past the front foot
- Not fully extending the arm
- Loading up/telegraphing before the jab
Tweaks
- Add a step-jab to close distance explosively
- Double and triple jab variations
- Jab while circling the bag
Muscles
Primary: Shoulders, Triceps
Secondary: Core, Forearms
Notes
Never skip pure jab rounds — it's the punch most fighters get lazy with once combinations are introduced.
