Shadow Boxing - Slip and Counter Drill

CombatShadow

Links defense directly to offense: slip an imaginary incoming punch and immediately fire a counter from the new angle created by the slip. This is the single most important combat-specific skill link in boxing — defense that creates offense.

Contraindications

None significant.

Setup

Boxing stance, visualize opponent's jab or cross incoming on each rep.

Execution

  1. 1Visualize the incoming punch and slip just outside its line
  2. 2Use the momentum/rotation created by the slip to load the counter punch
  3. 3Fire the counter (cross, hook, or uppercut depending on slip direction) immediately
  4. 4Reset to guard after the counter
  5. 5Alternate slip-left/counter-right and slip-right/counter-left

Key cues

  • Slip creates the punch, don't slip then separately punch
  • Small slip, big counter
  • Stay balanced through the whole motion — no falling into the slip
  • Eyes stay on the target
  • Exhale sharply on the counter

Common faults

  • Slipping too far and being out of range to counter
  • Two disconnected movements instead of one fluid slip-into-punch
  • Dropping the guard hand during the slip
  • Only practicing one direction
  • Standing upright after slipping instead of staying loaded

Tweaks

  • Add a double counter (e.g., slip right, cross, hook)
  • Combine with a pivot to create a full angle change plus counter
  • Drill exclusively off the jab, then exclusively off the cross

Regressions

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Obliques, Glutes, Shoulders

Secondary: Core, Quadriceps

Notes

Precision Striking explicitly teaches flowing offense into defense and back into offense within the same rotational chain — this drill operationalizes that principle.
