Shadow Boxing - Defensive Footwork (Slip, Roll, Pivot)

CombatShadow

Isolated defensive movement work — slipping off the centerline, rolling under imaginary hooks, and pivoting off the back foot to change angles. This is the foundation of head movement and angle-based defense taught by every serious boxing coach.

Contraindications

Knee issues — reduce depth on rolls.

Setup

Boxing stance, knees bent, weight centered, imagine an opponent throwing straight and looping punches.

Execution

  1. 1Slip by shifting weight to one leg and moving the head off the centerline, keeping eyes forward
  2. 2Roll under a hook by dropping into a shallow squat and tracing a U-shape with the head, exiting on the other side
  3. 3Pivot by planting the lead foot and rotating the back foot 90 degrees around it to change angle
  4. 4Return to guard/stance after every defensive action
  5. 5Combine two punches with a defensive action to link offense and defense

Key cues

  • Move the head, not just lean the shoulders
  • Eyes stay on the target throughout the slip or roll
  • Bend the knees to roll, don't bend at the waist
  • Pivot off the front foot to create new angles
  • Small, controlled movements — not exaggerated

Common faults

  • Bending at the waist instead of using the legs
  • Slipping too far and losing balance/power position
  • Looking down or closing eyes while rolling
  • Standing still after the defensive move instead of resetting stance
  • Crossing the feet during the pivot

Tweaks

  • Add a slip-rope or resistance band across the shoulders for feedback
  • Combine roll + counter punch in one motion
  • Practice pivoting both directions equally

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Glutes, Obliques, Quadriceps

Secondary: Hip Flexors, Core, Calves

Notes

Dedicate full rounds to defense-only work early in a session before adding offense; this is the drill Jason should prioritize since head movement is the most commonly neglected S&C skill.
