Reflex bag at head height, boxing stance.
Execution
- 1Throw one punch (jab or cross) into the center of the bag
- 2Watch the bag rebound away and then swing back toward you
- 3Time a second punch to meet the bag precisely as it returns
- 4Retract to guard between each punch
- 5Gradually increase the punch pace as timing accuracy improves
Key cues
- Watch the full rebound cycle before committing to the second punch
- Time the punch to the bag's return, not on a fixed count
- Stay relaxed and patient — rushing kills timing accuracy
- Keep the guard hand up while waiting for the rebound
- Progress speed only after timing is consistently accurate
Common faults
- Punching on a fixed rhythm rather than reading the actual bag movement
- Flinching or pulling back instead of meeting the bag confidently
- Losing patience and rushing before the rebound completes
- Off-center hits causing erratic, unpredictable rebounds
- Guard dropping while watching the bag
Tweaks
- Alternate which hand meets the rebound
- Add a slip between the first punch and the timed second punch
- Increase bag tension for a faster, harder timing challenge
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Shoulders, Core
Secondary: Forearms, Obliques
Notes
This is the core skill the reflex bag exists to build — timing a strike against a moving, unpredictable target, directly transferable to countering a live opponent.
