CombatReflex
Unscripted reflex bag work combining any punches, slips, ducks, and counters freely at high tempo — the reflex bag equivalent of freestyle heavy bag rounds, testing all skills built in isolation drills under continuous, unpredictable conditions.

Sets

Reps
2-3 min rounds
Rest
1 min
Contraindications
Requires solid grounding in isolated timing/defense drills first.Setup
Reflex bag at head height, boxing stance, fully warmed up from isolated drills.
Execution
- 1Throw any combination of punches at the bag
- 2React to each rebound with whatever defensive or offensive response feels appropriate in the moment
- 3Maintain continuous movement and output for the round duration
- 4Keep technique tight even as intensity and randomness increase
- 5Push pace toward the end of the round for a conditioning finish
Key cues
- Let the bag dictate your reactions, don't force a script
- Stay relaxed to react quickly
- Keep the guard up between every action
- Trust the timing you've built in isolated drills
- Increase output intensity through the round
Common faults
- Falling back on only 1-2 favorite patterns instead of true freestyle
- Getting hit repeatedly by the rebound due to rushing
- Losing technique quality as fatigue and randomness increase
- Standing too close and getting dominated by the bag's movement
- Neglecting defensive reactions in favor of only offense
Tweaks
- Add a specific constraint each round (e.g., defense-only reactions, or hooks-only offense)
- Increase bag tension for added difficulty
- Time rounds to match fight-length intervals (3 min)
Muscles
Primary: Shoulders, Core, Cardiovascular System
Secondary: Obliques, Calves
Notes
Reserve this for the end of a reflex bag session as the integration test of all component skills.
