L-Sit Progression

CoreBW

A static gymnastics hold where the legs are extended straight out in front at hip height while supporting the body on the hands (or hanging from a bar), demanding immense hip flexor and rectus abdominis isometric strength combined with shoulder depression strength.

Sets

4

Reps

5-15 sec hold

Rest

1 min

Contraindications

Wrist pain supporting on hands — use parallettes or perform hanging instead.

Setup

Support the body on parallettes, the floor, or hang from a pull-up bar with straight arms.

Execution

  1. 1Press the shoulders down and away from the ears, depressing the scapula
  2. 2Lift the straight legs to hip height, holding them parallel to the floor
  3. 3Keep the low back from rounding excessively or arching
  4. 4Hold the position for time, breathing shallowly
  5. 5Lower with control when the set ends

Key cues

  • Press the shoulders down, not just locking the elbows
  • Point the toes, squeeze the legs together
  • Keep the chest slightly forward for balance
  • Breathe steady, don't hold your breath

Common faults

  • Shoulders shrugging up toward the ears instead of pressing down
  • Legs dropping below hip height as fatigue sets in
  • Rounding the upper back excessively to compensate
  • Bending the knees to cheat the hold (tuck instead of full L)

Tweaks

  • Start with a tuck-sit (knees bent to chest) as a regression
  • Progress to one leg extended at a time
  • Build hold time in 3-5 second increments
