Heavy Bag - Half-Step Combination Drill

CombatBag

A Precision Striking signature drill combining small half-steps with combination punching — stepping in to set up the combo, then half-stepping out (exit) after finishing, mimicking real in-and-out fight movement rather than static combo throwing.

Contraindications

None significant.

Setup

Boxing stance at slightly outside range from the bag.

Execution

  1. 1Take a small half-step forward to close range into combo distance
  2. 2Fire the planned combination while settled on the new base
  3. 3Immediately half-step back out to the starting range after finishing
  4. 4Keep guard up throughout entry and exit
  5. 5Repeat with a consistent entry-combo-exit rhythm

Key cues

  • Small steps, not lunges, for the entry
  • Plant fully before throwing the combo
  • Exit with the same control as the entry
  • Hands stay up the entire in-and-out cycle
  • Treat entry and exit as seriously as the punches themselves

Common faults

  • Lunging in too far and losing balance
  • Throwing punches before the entry step is complete
  • Forgetting the exit step entirely, staying in range and exposed
  • Dropping guard during the transition steps
  • Inconsistent step size, disrupting rhythm and range control

Tweaks

  • Vary combo length between reps
  • Add a pivot on the exit instead of a straight step-back
  • Combine with a feint before the entry step

Regressions

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Calves, Quadriceps, Shoulders

Secondary: Core, Glutes

Notes

This directly addresses the common flaw of fighters who only know how to punch while stationary — entry/exit footwork is what makes bag work transfer to sparring.
