Execution
- 1Push off the back foot to advance forward explosively
- 2Push off the front foot to retreat backward under control
- 3Keep stance width consistent throughout — don't narrow or widen unnaturally
- 4Combine with a punch on the advance to simulate closing distance to attack
- 5Maintain guard position throughout all movement
Key cues
- Push off the correct foot for each direction
- Keep the stance width consistent while moving
- Stay light — this should look explosive, not lumbering
- Guard hands up during every transition
- Advance with intent, retreat with control, not panic
Common faults
- Narrowing the stance too much when retreating quickly
- Crossing the feet during rapid advances or retreats
- Losing guard position during the transition
- Advancing/retreating in a straight predictable line every time
- Overcommitting on the advance and being unable to retreat quickly if needed
Tweaks
- Add lateral movement combined with in-out for full ring coverage
- Attach specific punches to the advance and defense to the retreat
- Increase the pace to a near-sprint tempo for conditioning
