CombatShadow
A footwork pattern that traces an L-shape or 45-degree step to create an off-angle relative to an imaginary opponent, rather than moving in straight lines — the specific footwork used to get 'off the centerline' and attack from angles the opponent doesn't expect.

Boxing stance, mark an imaginary opponent directly ahead.
Execution
- 1Step laterally at a 45-90 degree angle with the lead or rear foot, forming an L-shaped path
- 2Bring the other foot to re-establish stance width at the new angle
- 3Immediately face back toward the imaginary opponent from the new position
- 4Throw a punch from the new angle to complete the pattern
- 5Reset and repeat toward the opposite angle
Key cues
- Step at an actual angle, not just straight side to side
- Re-square your stance toward the target after the step
- Keep the step compact — big lunging steps lose balance and power
- Throw a real punch from the new angle each rep
- Practice both left and right angles evenly
Common faults
- Stepping straight sideways instead of at a true angle
- Not re-facing the target after the step, losing the attacking angle
- Overstepping and losing balance or power position
- Neglecting to punch from the new angle, making it just movement with no payoff
- Only practicing the dominant angle direction
Tweaks
- Combine with a pivot for an even sharper angle change
- Add this pattern into heavy bag work by circling and stepping at angles
- Chain multiple L-steps in sequence for advanced ring-cutting practice
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Glutes, Obliques, Calves
Secondary: Core, Quadriceps
Notes
This is the drill that separates fighters who only move in straight lines from those with genuine ring craft and angle-based offense.
