Dumbbell Overhead Squat

SquatDB

Contraindications

Shoulder impingement risk if the lockout breaks down under fatigue — regress weight before form suffers.

Setup

Press one or two dumbbells overhead to full lockout. Feet squat-stance width.

Execution

  1. 1Lock the dumbbell(s) overhead with active shoulders
  2. 2Brace core before descending
  3. 3Squat down keeping the dumbbell(s) stacked over the body
  4. 4Reach full depth without losing lockout
  5. 5Drive up to standing

Key cues

  • Punch the dumbbell to the ceiling
  • Keep the wrist stacked under the weight
  • Chest up throughout
  • Brace hard
  • Squat straight down, not forward

Common faults

  • Dumbbell drifting forward of the ear
  • Losing shoulder lockout under fatigue
  • Excessive forward lean
  • Heels lifting off the ground
  • Knee valgus at depth

Tweaks

  • Start unilateral (single-arm) before bilateral
  • Use light loads to prioritize mobility over weight
  • Add a pause at the bottom for extra stability work

Regressions

Progressions
