Barbell Overhead Squat

SquatBBRackPlates

A squat performed with the bar locked out overhead in a wide snatch grip. The ultimate mobility and full-body stability test — demands elite ankle, hip, thoracic, and shoulder mobility plus core control.

Contraindications

Extremely mobility-demanding — avoid loading heavy without adequate ankle, hip, thoracic, and shoulder mobility. High shoulder impingement risk if form breaks down.

Setup

Snatch-width grip on the bar, locked out overhead with the bar stacked over mid-foot. Feet squat-stance width.

Execution

  1. 1Lock the bar out overhead, arms fully extended, active shoulders
  2. 2Brace the core hard before descending
  3. 3Descend keeping the bar directly over mid-foot
  4. 4Squat to full depth without losing overhead lockout
  5. 5Drive up keeping the bar path vertical

Key cues

  • Push the bar into the ceiling, arms locked
  • Bar over mid-foot at all times
  • Chest up, don't let the bar drift forward
  • Screw feet into the ground
  • Brace before every rep

Common faults

  • Bar drifting forward, losing overhead position
  • Excessive forward torso lean
  • Insufficient ankle dorsiflexion causing heel lift
  • Losing active shoulder lockout, elbows bending
  • Knee valgus at depth

Tweaks

  • Elevate heels on plates to reduce ankle demand while learning
  • Regress to a PVC pipe before loading
  • Combine with overhead squat mobility drill sequence

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Quadriceps, Shoulders, Core

Secondary: Gluteus Maximus, Upper Back, Adductors

Notes

Considered one of the best diagnostic movements for full-body mobility deficits in the S&C field.
