A single-arm overhead carry with an added controlled torso rotation on each step (or every few steps) — a multi-plane progression of the standard waiter's walk that challenges the shoulder and core to stabilize through movement, not just a static hold.

Contraindications

Advanced variation — master the static waiter's walk first. Avoid with any shoulder instability or lower back rotational pain.

Setup

Press a kettlebell to a locked-out overhead position in one hand, as in a standard waiter's walk.

Execution

  1. 1Lock the bell out overhead, bicep by the ear
  2. 2Walk forward while adding a small controlled rotation of the torso toward the loaded side every few steps
  3. 3Keep the overhead arm locked and stable throughout the rotation
  4. 4Return to a square torso between rotations
  5. 5Switch arms after completing the set

Key cues

  • Rotate from the thoracic spine, not the lower back
  • Keep the overhead lockout unbroken through every rotation
  • Small, controlled rotations — not a twisting lunge
  • Brace the core before each rotation, not after
  • Slow the pace further than a standard waiter's walk

Common faults

  • Losing the overhead lockout during the rotation
  • Rotating from the lower back instead of the upper back
  • Using too much load — this variation demands far less weight than a static carry
  • Rushing the rotation instead of controlling it
  • Letting the free arm flail for momentum instead of staying controlled

Tweaks

  • Start with rotation only every 5th step, then increase frequency as control improves
  • Reduce load significantly compared to a standard waiter's walk
  • Add a slight side-step during the rotation for an even greater multi-plane challenge

Notes
