Single-Arm KB Overhead Carry (Waiter Walk)

CarryKB

A single kettlebell pressed and locked out overhead while walking. The 'overhead complement to the suitcase carry,' per StrongFirst — it demands continuous shoulder-packing, grip control, and core bracing against both lateral flexion and the raised center of gravity.

Reps

15-25m per side

Rest

Contraindications

Avoid with active shoulder impingement or unstable overhead mobility. Start very light — this is deceptively demanding.

Setup

Clean or press a kettlebell to a fully locked-out overhead position. Find the wrist/hand angle where the bell balances most naturally on the forearm.

Execution

  1. 1Lock the elbow out fully, bicep near the ear
  2. 2Pack the shoulder down while pressing up (the 'paradox' cue)
  3. 3Walk with slow, deliberate steps
  4. 4Keep the wrist straight — no cocking back
  5. 5Lower the bell to the rack position under control at the end

Key cues

  • Bicep behind or beside the ear
  • Drive knuckles to the ceiling
  • Pack the shoulder down while pushing up
  • Grip firm but not crushing — save the forearm
  • Quiet arm — minimal wobble

Common faults

  • Shrugging the shoulder up toward the ear
  • Letting the arm drift forward out of the frontal plane
  • Leaning the torso away from the loaded side
  • Holding the breath instead of breathing steadily
  • Wrist cocking back, losing the straight-line stack

Tweaks

  • Start with a bottoms-up hold before progressing to a standard overhead lockout
  • Add slow high-knee steps for extra hip-core integration
  • Combine with a suitcase carry on the opposite arm (offset carry)

Regressions

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Deltoids, Rotator Cuff, Obliques

Secondary: Trapezius (lower), Core, Forearms

Notes

STRENGTH/stability carry: moderate load, moderate distance (StrongFirst recommends 50-100m across 3-5 sets). Not a max-load movement — time under tension and positional control matter more than absolute weight.
