One arm holds a kettlebell overhead (waiter position) while the other holds a second implement at the side (suitcase position) — a true multi-plane offset carry. Referenced by Gray Cook / Dan John as the 'Cook Drill' family of carries, cycling through all carry positions in one set.

Reps
10-15m per side
Rest
2 min
Contraindications
High-skill movement — master single-arm waiter and suitcase carries independently first. Avoid with any acute shoulder or oblique strain.Setup
Press one kettlebell overhead to lockout. Deadlift a second implement in the opposite hand to a standard suitcase-carry position.
Execution
- 1Lock the overhead arm out fully, bicep by the ear
- 2Keep the suitcase-side arm straight, resisting the lean
- 3Walk with slow, controlled steps
- 4Keep the torso vertical — don't let either side pull you off-center
- 5Switch arms for the second set (reverse which side is overhead)
Key cues
- Brace against pulls from both directions simultaneously
- Overhead arm locked, suitcase arm straight
- Move slowly — this is a high-skill combination
- Keep the ribcage stacked over the pelvis
- Breathe steadily despite the compound bracing demand
Common faults
- Leaning toward the suitcase side to compensate
- Losing the overhead lockout as fatigue sets in
- Rotating the torso to 'balance' the asymmetric load
- Using too much weight on either side before mastering the combination
- Rushing the walk and losing control of one arm's position
Tweaks
- Lighten both loads significantly compared to single-implement carries
- Use the 'Cook Drill' full cycle — overhead to rack to suitcase, switching hands — for extended sets
- Shorten distance drastically while learning the skill
Muscles
Primary: Obliques, Deltoids, Core
Secondary: Rotator Cuff, Quadratus Lumborum, Forearms
Notes
STRENGTH/stability carry: light combined load, short distance. This is the 'Cook Drill' concept — cycling overhead-to-rack-to-suitcase in one continuous set is even more advanced than the static offset version described here.
