CombatShadow
The foundational boxing combo: lead jab followed immediately by the rear cross. Trains straight-line punch mechanics, hip rotation, and the punch-retract-guard cycle without any equipment. Everything else in boxing builds on this pairing.

Contraindications
None significant; shoulder impingement sufferers should limit full extension speed initially.Setup
Stand in boxing stance, lead foot forward, hands at cheek level, chin tucked, knees soft.
Execution
- 1Snap the lead jab straight out, rotating the fist palm-down on impact, then retract immediately
- 2As the jab returns, drive the rear hip and shoulder through to fire the cross
- 3Pivot the rear foot toe outward as the cross extends for full hip rotation
- 4Return both hands to guard position after each punch
- 5Exhale sharply on each strike
Key cues
- Jab is a flick, not a push
- Turn the hip and heel on the cross
- Chin tucked behind the shoulder
- Hands return home to the cheek every time
- Exhale on impact
Common faults
- Dropping the guard hand after the jab
- Throwing the cross with the arm only, no hip turn
- Telegraphing by winding up before the jab
- Standing square instead of staying in stance
- Holding breath through the combo
Tweaks
- Add a step forward with the jab to close distance
- Throw off both stances (orthodox and southpaw)
- Add a slip after the cross to blend offense and defense
Muscles
Primary: Shoulders, Triceps, Obliques
Secondary: Core, Hip Rotators, Calves
Notes
The 1-2 is the backbone drill of every boxing session. Use as a warm-up before heavier combo or bag work; 3x 2-3 min rounds with 60s rest is standard.
