Reflex Bag - Hook and Slip

CombatReflex

Throw a hook into the reflex bag, then slip to avoid the bag's return swing rather than absorbing or blocking it — training the fighter to combine offense with immediate head-movement defense against a live, reactive object.

Contraindications

Risk of being struck by rebound if timing is off — start slow.

Setup

Reflex bag at head height, boxing stance at hook range.

Execution

  1. 1Throw the lead or rear hook into the center of the bag
  2. 2As the bag rebounds back toward your head, slip to the side to avoid it
  3. 3Return to guard position immediately after the slip
  4. 4Repeat, alternating hook side and slip direction
  5. 5Increase pace once the slip timing is consistent

Key cues

  • Watch the bag's rebound path to time the slip correctly
  • Slip just enough to avoid it — don't overcommit and lose position
  • Keep the guard hand up throughout
  • Stay light on the feet to slip quickly
  • Immediately reset to throw the next hook

Common faults

  • Not slipping in time and getting hit by the rebound
  • Slipping too far and losing balance or positioning
  • Throwing a looping, telegraphed hook that creates an unpredictable rebound
  • Standing too far or too close, disrupting timing
  • Dropping the guard hand during the slip

Tweaks

  • Add a counter punch immediately after the slip
  • Alternate hook-slip-left and hook-slip-right patterns
  • Increase bag speed/tension for a harder timing challenge
