Walking Lunge - Dumbbell

SquatDB

Heavier loaded version of the walking lunge using dumbbells held at the sides or in a front-rack. A staple hypertrophy and athletic conditioning exercise once bodyweight walking lunges are mastered.

Sets

3

Reps

8-10 steps per leg

Rest

1:30

Contraindications

Same balance demands as bodyweight walking lunge, amplified by load — build up weight conservatively.

Setup

Hold dumbbells at the sides (or racked at the shoulders for extra core demand).

Execution

  1. 1Step forward into a long stride
  2. 2Lower the back knee toward the floor under load
  3. 3Drive through the front heel to stand and step through
  4. 4Continue alternating legs while carrying the load
  5. 5Keep torso upright throughout despite the added weight

Key cues

  • Big controlled step forward
  • Chest up despite the load
  • Drive through the front heel
  • Brace the core against the added weight
  • Control every transition

Common faults

  • Torso leaning forward under the load
  • Losing balance between steps with heavier dumbbells
  • Knee valgus under fatigue
  • Rushing transitions
  • Uneven stride length

Tweaks

  • Use a front-rack (goblet-style) hold for more core demand
  • Add a weighted vest instead of dumbbells for hands-free loading
  • Progress load gradually week to week

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Quadriceps, Gluteus Maximus

Secondary: Hamstrings, Core, Forearms

Notes

A classic progression once the bodyweight walking lunge pattern is well established.
