Kettlebell Push Jerk

PushKB

The most explosive of the kettlebell overhead presses — a dip-drive-and-re-bend sequence that lets you move maximal overhead loads by receiving the bell in a shallow squat at lockout rather than pressing it the whole way with the arms.

Contraindications

Technical movement — master the strict press and push press first.

Setup

Kettlebell in the rack position, elbow tucked, feet shoulder-width.

Execution

  1. 1Dip the knees quickly and shallowly
  2. 2Drive explosively upward, sending the bell toward lockout
  3. 3Re-bend the knees slightly to 'catch' the bell overhead at full arm extension
  4. 4Stand tall to finish, then lower back to the rack

Key cues

  • Dip, drive, and drop under the bell
  • Let the legs do the heavy lifting
  • Catch the lockout with straight arms
  • Reset in the rack before the next rep

Common faults

  • Pressing with the arms instead of driving with the legs
  • Not re-bending the knees to receive the bell
  • Losing wrist position in the rack
  • Catching the bell with bent arms instead of locked out

Tweaks

  • Double kettlebell push jerk for total-body power
  • Alternate arms in EMOM-style conditioning
  • Combine with a clean for a full clean-and-jerk complex

Regressions
