Contraindications
Shoulder impingement — reduce range of motion, avoid pressing behind the frontal plane.Setup
Clean the kettlebell to the rack position — elbow tucked to ribs, wrist straight, forearm vertical. Feet hip-width, glutes and abs braced.
Execution
- 1Brace hard — 'arm wrestle' the bell to lock the shoulder in place
- 2Press straight up, keeping the bell close to the body initially
- 3Tip the wrist slightly ('victorious' finish) as you lock out
- 4Lower back to the rack position under control
Key cues
- Arm wrestle the bell for a tight lockout
- Squeeze the glutes on the working side
- Press in a straight line, not around the head
- Finish with a subtle 'victorious' wrist turn
Common faults
- Leaning away from the load (lateral flexion) instead of bracing
- Bar/bell path drifting out and around instead of straight up
- Losing tightness in the working-side glute and lat
- Shrugging the shoulder instead of pressing through the lockout
Tweaks
- Add a pause at the rack position or lockout
- Perform from a half-kneeling stance for more stability demand
- Bottoms-up grip for a serious stability challenge
