Kettlebell Bent Press

CoreKB

An old-time strongman press where the body bends and rotates underneath a locked-out kettlebell rather than the arm pressing the weight up — one of the most technical core-intensive movements in the kettlebell canon, demanding elite thoracic rotation, hip hinge control, and shoulder stability.

Sets

Reps

3-5 per side

Rest

1:30

Contraindications

Shoulder instability, limited thoracic rotation mobility, or lack of windmill competency — build those prerequisites first.

Setup

Clean a heavy kettlebell to the rack position at the shoulder, feet turned slightly toward the working side.

Execution

  1. 1Keep the kettlebell arm locked and the bell stacked over the wrist throughout
  2. 2Hinge and rotate the torso away from and under the bell, bending at the hips and laterally
  3. 3Continue rotating and hinging until the arm is fully locked out overhead, achieved by the body moving, not the arm pressing
  4. 4Reverse the motion with control back to the rack position
  5. 5Switch sides after the prescribed reps

Key cues

  • The body moves, the arm just holds the lockout
  • Keep the bell stacked over the wrist the entire descent
  • Rotate and hinge together, not one before the other
  • Free hand can slide down the leg for support

Common faults

  • Pressing the arm instead of moving the body underneath the bell
  • Losing the stacked wrist-under-bell alignment
  • Rushing the descent instead of a slow controlled hinge and rotate
  • Excessive lateral spine flexion instead of a true hip hinge with rotation

Tweaks

  • Practice with a very light kettlebell or just bodyweight to learn the pattern first
  • Break the movement into isolated hip hinge and rotation drills before combining
  • Only add load once the pattern is technically sound

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Obliques, Shoulders, Glutes

Secondary: Erector Spinae, Triceps, Hamstrings

Notes

ROTATION + ANTI-LATERAL FLEXION, difficulty 5, dynamic/loaded core. One of the most technical movements in the kettlebell lexicon.
