A StrongFirst hallmark movement — a kettlebell held locked out overhead while the body hinges laterally at the hip, reaching the opposite hand toward the floor. It trains the core to control multiple planes at once: resisting lateral flexion, controlling thoracic rotation, and stabilizing the loaded shoulder overhead.

Contraindications
Shoulder instability overhead or hamstring inflexibility — master the bodyweight version first.Setup
Press or clean a kettlebell overhead to full lockout on one side. Feet angled roughly 45 degrees, the foot under the kettlebell turned out.
Execution
- 1Shift the hip under the kettlebell back and up
- 2Keep the arm holding the kettlebell locked out and vertical throughout
- 3Hinge the free hand down the inside of the front leg, rotating the torso
- 4Do not laterally flex the spine — the motion comes from the hip hinge and thoracic rotation
- 5Reverse the motion back to standing under control
Key cues
- Shift and lift the back hip first
- Keep the kettlebell arm bolted vertical
- Rotate the ribcage, don't just bend sideways
- 70/30 weight distribution favoring the back leg
Common faults
- Laterally flexing the spine instead of hinging and rotating
- Kettlebell arm drifting out of vertical alignment
- Rear heel rising off the floor
- Going deeper than current mobility allows, forcing compensation
- Rushing the descent instead of a slow controlled reach
Tweaks
- Start with a low windmill using just bodyweight or a light object
- Reduce depth as a regression
- Progress load gradually once the movement pattern is clean
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Obliques, Glutes, Hamstrings
Secondary: Shoulders, Erector Spinae
Notes
MULTI-PLANE: primarily ANTI-ROTATION and ANTI-LATERAL FLEXION with a controlled ROTATION component through the thoracic spine. Flagged as cross-category per task instructions.
