Contraindications
None significant.Setup
Boxing stance at bag range, enough open floor space to circle fully around the bag.
Execution
- 1Circle the bag laterally in one direction using proper non-crossing footwork
- 2Throw a punch or combination periodically while maintaining the circling motion
- 3Reverse direction periodically to work both sides equally
- 4Keep consistent range from the bag throughout the circle
- 5Maintain guard position while moving between strikes
Key cues
- Never cross your feet while circling
- Keep consistent distance from the bag, don't drift
- Punch off the circling motion, don't stop dead to throw
- Stay on the balls of the feet
- Change direction periodically, don't only circle one way
Common faults
- Crossing the feet during the circle
- Drifting too close or too far from the bag over time
- Stopping completely to throw every punch, defeating the purpose
- Only circling in the dominant direction
- Losing guard discipline while focused on footwork
Tweaks
- Add pivots at set intervals during the circle
- Combine circling with feints
- Increase circling speed for a conditioning emphasis
Progressions
Muscles
Primary: Calves, Glutes, Core
Secondary: Quadriceps, Shoulders
Notes
This is the bag-work equivalent of 'cutting off the ring' — an essential skill for both offensive pressure fighters and counter-punchers who need range control.
