Contraindications

Highest injury risk in the handstand family — master standard wall HSPU first. Head impact risk with insufficient control.

Setup

Set up parallettes or sturdy blocks shoulder-width apart. Kick up into a handstand with hands on the elevated surfaces.

Execution

  1. 1Lower the head below hand level into the deficit
  2. 2Keep elbows tracking forward, hollow body tight
  3. 3Press back up to full lockout
  4. 4Control the depth precisely — don't let the head crash into the floor

Key cues

  • Deeper range means slower, more controlled reps
  • Elbows forward, not flared
  • Keep the hollow body position the whole rep
  • Full lockout at the top every rep

Common faults

  • Losing balance due to the added instability of an elevated surface
  • Flaring elbows under the increased range demand
  • Rushing the descent, risking head impact
  • Excessive arch instead of a hollow body

Tweaks

  • Gradually increase deficit height as strength improves
  • Add a pause at the bottom of the deficit
  • Progress toward free-standing HSPU

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Anterior Deltoid, Triceps Brachii

Secondary: Core, Serratus Anterior
