Contraindications
Same as front squat — requires adequate front rack mobility; avoid crashing hard onto the box.Setup
Set up a front squat rack position with a box positioned at target depth behind you.
Execution
- 1Descend under control keeping elbows up
- 2Lightly touch the box while maintaining tension
- 3Do not relax at the bottom
- 4Drive up powerfully out of the pause
- 5Stand to lockout with elbows still high
Key cues
- Elbows up the whole way
- Sit back onto the box, stay tight
- No bounce off the box
- Explode up from the pause
- Stay tall throughout
Common faults
- Elbows dropping as fatigue sets in
- Relaxing on the box
- Box height too low, forcing loss of upright torso
- Knee valgus on the drive out
- Losing brace during the pause
Tweaks
- Use for teaching depth to front squat beginners
- Vary box height for different training emphasis
- Add a pause of 2-3 seconds for extra positional strength
Progressions
Muscles
Primary: Quadriceps, Core
Secondary: Gluteus Maximus, Upper Back
Notes
Useful combination movement for lifters working on both front squat mobility and depth consistency simultaneously.
