Barbell Box Squat

SquatBBRackBoxPlates

Back squat performed to a box set at or slightly below parallel. Teaches depth consistency, hip-hinge patterning, and removes stretch-reflex bounce, building raw starting strength out of the hole.

Contraindications

Avoid crashing onto the box with heavy loads — can strain the low back if the box is too low relative to hip mobility. Not ideal for those with acute knee flexion pain.

Setup

Set a box/bench behind you at desired depth. Set up as in a normal back squat with the box positioned so you sit straight down onto it.

Execution

  1. 1Descend under control exactly like a normal squat
  2. 2Lightly touch the box maintaining full-body tension
  3. 3Do not relax or bounce off the box
  4. 4Pause briefly, then drive up powerfully
  5. 5Stand to full lockout

Key cues

  • Sit back onto the box, don't just drop
  • Stay tight — the box is a depth marker, not a rest stop
  • Drive the floor away on the way up
  • Keep the shins vertical as you sit back
  • Explode off the box

Common faults

  • Relaxing/collapsing onto the box
  • Using box bounce for momentum instead of muscular drive
  • Box too high, limiting range of motion benefit
  • Losing brace at the bottom pause
  • Knees caving on the drive out of the hole

Tweaks

  • Vary box height to target different depths
  • Add a pause of 2-3 seconds for strength-speed work
  • Use it as a max-effort variation in conjugate programming
