Contraindications
Flexion-intolerant low back pain — regress to bodyweight crunch.Setup
Anchor a band overhead or to a high point behind you. Kneel or lie on the floor facing away from the anchor, holding the band ends at the head or chest.
Execution
- 1Brace the core and pull the band down and forward by flexing the spine
- 2Curl the chest toward the hips, leading with the ribcage, not the arms
- 3Keep the hips relatively fixed, isolating the flexion in the upper spine
- 4Pause briefly at full flexion
- 5Return to the start under control, resisting the band's pull back
Key cues
- Lead with the ribcage, not the arms
- Hips stay still, only the spine flexes
- Control the return just like the crunch
- Exhale hard on the crunch down
Common faults
- Pulling with the arms instead of flexing the spine
- Hips shifting back to assist instead of staying fixed
- Using a band too heavy, sacrificing range and control
- Not achieving true spinal flexion, just nodding the head
Tweaks
- Perform standing for a full range variant
- Increase band tension progressively
- Add a slight rotation for an oblique-emphasis variant
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Rectus Abdominis
Secondary: Obliques, Hip Flexors
Notes
FLEXION. Explicit substitute for the cable crunch, which is excluded per equipment rules (no cable machines).
