20 seconds of maximal-effort work followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for 8 rounds (4 minutes total per exercise block).

How it works

Originally a lab protocol: perform an exercise at supramaximal effort for 20 seconds, then rest exactly 10 seconds, and repeat this 20:10 cycle for 8 total rounds (4 minutes). Multiple 4-minute Tabata blocks can be chained with a short rest (60-90s) between blocks for a longer session.

Pros

  • Extremely time-efficient — proven cardiorespiratory benefit in just 4 minutes per block
  • Simple structure, no equipment required for bodyweight versions
  • Strong research base (Tabata et al. 1996)
  • Very high intensity stimulus

Cons

  • True Tabata intensity (170% VO2max) is brutally hard and rarely achieved outside lab settings
  • Not appropriate for strength/skill work
  • Easy to under-dose and lose the intended stimulus

Notes

Named for Dr. Izumi Tabata, who studied the protocol with the Japanese national speed skating team in the mid-1990s. Popular fitness-industry 'Tabata workouts' are usually far less intense than the original research protocol.
