A single 'set' broken into small clusters of 1-3 reps with brief intra-set rest periods (10-30s), allowing heavier loads or more total quality reps than a traditional continuous set.
How it works
Select a load (often 85-95% of a rep max). Perform 1-3 reps, rack/pause, rest 10-30 seconds, then perform another 1-3 reps. Repeat this cluster pattern until the total prescribed reps for the 'set' are completed, then take a full rest before the next full cluster set.
Pros
- Allows heavier loads to be handled for more total reps than a straight set
- Reduces technical breakdown from fatigue within a set
- Bridges the gap between max strength and rep-based hypertrophy work
