Wrist Push-Ups (Against Wall)

MobilityBW

Gentle weight-bearing wrist extension drill against a wall, used to build tolerance for the extended-wrist positions required in push-ups, handstands, and front-rack kettlebell work.

Reps

10-12

Rest

20s

Contraindications

Wrist pain with weight-bearing — reduce lean angle or regress to CARs only.

Setup

Stand facing a wall, place palms flat against it at chest height, fingers pointing up.

Execution

  1. 1Lean the body weight forward into the hands, increasing wrist extension
  2. 2Perform small push-up-like reps, bending and straightening the elbows
  3. 3Keep the wrists as flat against the wall as tolerable
  4. 4Progress by moving feet further from the wall for more load over time

Key cues

  • Keep palms fully flat against the wall
  • Load gradually — build tolerance over sessions, don't force pain
  • Keep fingers spread for a stable base
  • Move slow and controlled

Common faults

  • Palms lifting off the wall (losing full contact)
  • Pushing through sharp pain instead of stopping at tension
  • Moving too fast without control
  • Fingers bunched together instead of spread

Tweaks

  • Progress to floor-based wrist push-ups (on hands and knees) once tolerated
  • Add fingers-pointing-down variation to train wrist flexion loading too
  • Combine with kneeling shoulder rocks for a complete wrist/shoulder warmup

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Wrist Extensors, Forearm Muscles

Secondary: Shoulder Stabilizers

Notes

Build up wrist loading tolerance gradually — this is often the limiting factor for handstand progress, not shoulder strength.
