Recent shoulder surgery — clear with a physical therapist before starting.

Setup

Face the anchor, arms extended at chest height, body leaning back in a straight line, light lean angle (closer to vertical) for a rehab-appropriate load.

Execution

  1. 1Perform a Y raise, sweeping the arms up and out
  2. 2Return to center and perform a T raise, sweeping the arms straight out to the sides
  3. 3Return to center and perform a W raise, pulling the elbows back with external rotation
  4. 4Repeat the Y-T-W sequence for the target number of rounds

Key cues

  • Keep the load light — this is about quality and endurance, not heavy resistance
  • Squeeze the shoulder blades down and back on every rep
  • Move slowly and with control through all three positions
  • Maintain a straight body line throughout the entire sequence

Common faults

  • Using too steep a lean angle, making the load too heavy for a health-focused protocol
  • Shrugging the shoulders instead of retracting the scapulae
  • Rushing through the three positions without control
  • Losing the straight body line as fatigue sets in

Tweaks

  • Perform for higher reps at very light load as a daily shoulder-health habit
  • Add single-arm versions for unilateral rotator cuff focus
  • Use as a warm-up before pressing or pulling work

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves.
