Contraindications

Neck strain — keep hands lightly supporting the head, don't pull.

Setup

Lie on your back, feet in the foot cradles with knees bent around 90 degrees, hands lightly behind the head or crossed on the chest.

Execution

  1. 1Engage the abs and curl the shoulders and upper back off the floor
  2. 2Focus on flexing the spine, not pulling with the neck
  3. 3Pause briefly at the top of the crunch
  4. 4Lower back down under control

Key cues

  • Lead with the chest, not the chin or neck
  • Exhale on the way up to engage the deep abs
  • Keep the feet stable in the cradles
  • Control the descent, don't just flop back down

Common faults

  • Pulling on the neck instead of using the abs
  • Using momentum to rock up
  • Feet slipping or swinging in the straps
  • Rushing through reps without a top pause

Tweaks

  • Add a twist for an oblique-focused crunch variant
  • Slow the tempo and add an isometric hold at the top
  • Progress to the atomic push-up or pike for more advanced core work

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. The suspended feet add a mild instability challenge compared to a standard floor crunch, primarily engaging additional stabilizers rather than changing the core flexion pattern itself.
