Setup

Face the anchor, hold both handles, and set the desired lean angle by walking the feet forward (harder) or backward (easier) from the anchor point.

Execution

  1. 1Start upright/vertical for the easiest version and master the full pulling range of motion
  2. 2Progressively walk feet forward over sessions to increase the lean angle
  3. 3At each angle, pull the chest fully to the handles and lower with control
  4. 4Only progress to a harder angle once the current angle is clean for target reps

Key cues

  • Choose the angle that lets you hit full range of motion for every rep
  • Progress angle, not just reps
  • Straight body line at every angle
  • Track which angle you used to progress deliberately over weeks

Common faults

  • Jumping to too extreme an angle before mastering form
  • Sagging hips at harder angles
  • Inconsistent angle from set to set, making progress hard to track
  • Rushing reps at an angle that's too easy to feel challenging

Tweaks

  • Combine with single-arm row for a double progression axis
  • Use foot position markers (tape on floor) to replicate angles precisely
  • Add pauses at the harder angles for extra time under tension

Notes

TRX-specific. This entry exists specifically to document the angle=intensity principle for rows: Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. More horizontal body position = feet further from anchor = harder row. This is the master reference variation for programming row progression by angle alone.
