A structured multi-level progression using the TRX for assistance to build toward a full single-leg pistol squat — widely taught as a 3-5 level system moving from a fully assisted squat to two-finger support to a free-standing pistol.

Contraindications

Knee or ankle instability — build the assisted single-leg squat base first.

Setup

Face the anchor holding one or both handles, one leg extended forward off the ground, standing leg slightly bent.

Execution

  1. 1Level 1: Perform an assisted ass-to-grass squat on the standing leg using full-hand support
  2. 2Level 2: Progress to a semi-bent-leg pistol with lighter support
  3. 3Level 3: Deepen the squat range while reducing hand grip to two fingers
  4. 4Level 4-5: Reduce assistance further until performing a full pistol with only a fingertip touch or no support

Key cues

  • Keep the extended leg as straight as mobility allows
  • Sit straight down, don't lean the torso too far forward
  • Drive through the full foot of the standing leg on the way up
  • Only progress support level once the current level is clean and controlled

Common faults

  • Extended leg touching the ground for illegal assistance
  • Knee caving inward on the standing leg
  • Rushing to reduce support before the movement is controlled
  • Torso collapsing forward at the bottom

Tweaks

  • Use a box behind you to control depth if mobility is limited
  • Perform box pistols first, then transition to the TRX-assisted version
  • Slow the eccentric to build strength through the full range

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. Single-limb variations are advanced — this is the flagship TRX single-leg strength progression; grip pressure (full hand -> two fingers -> none) is the specific assistance-reduction lever for pistols.
