TRX Overhead Squat (Assisted Mobility)

A squat performed with the TRX straps fully lengthened and arms extended overhead in a wide V, using body-weight counterbalance to help maintain thoracic extension and ankle/hip mobility through a deep squat — more a mobility drill than a strength move.

Contraindications

Shoulder impingement — reduce overhead range.

Setup

Lengthen the straps fully. Face the anchor, hold a handle in each hand with arms extended overhead forming a wide V/X shape with the body, feet shoulder-width.

Execution

  1. 1Keep the arms extended overhead throughout — resist letting them drift forward
  2. 2Sit the hips back and down into as deep a squat as mobility allows
  3. 3Use gentle counter-tension against the straps to stay upright
  4. 4Drive back up to standing while keeping the overhead arm position

Key cues

  • Arms stay locked overhead in a wide V the entire time
  • Move slowly — this is a mobility drill, not a power move
  • Keep the chest lifted and ribs down
  • Full depth only as far as mobility allows without rounding

Common faults

  • Letting the arms drift forward, losing the overhead position
  • Rushing the tempo
  • Rounding the lower back at depth
  • Heels lifting off the ground

Tweaks

  • Pair with ankle mobility drills beforehand
  • Hold at the bottom for 3-5 seconds
  • Use as a warm-up movement before heavier squat work

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. This variant doubles as both a lower-body movement and a mobility drill per the task's dual-purpose categorization — filed under Squat but cross-relevant to Mobility work.
