Contraindications

Shoulder impingement — reduce range or switch to a landmine press pattern instead.

Setup

Anchor set overhead. Kneel facing the anchor, holding a handle in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward, hips stacked over knees.

Execution

  1. 1Brace the core and keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis (no arching)
  2. 2Press both handles straight overhead to full extension
  3. 3Control the descent back to shoulder height
  4. 4Keep knees, hips, and shoulders in one vertical stack throughout

Key cues

  • Ribs down, don't let the low back arch
  • Press straight up, not forward
  • Squeeze glutes to lock the kneeling base
  • Full lockout overhead each rep

Common faults

  • Arching the lower back to get the arms overhead
  • Losing the kneeling base and rocking forward
  • Uneven handle path side to side
  • Shrugging shoulders instead of pressing through full range

Tweaks

  • Perform in a half-kneeling stance for added hip stability challenge
  • Alternate arms for a unilateral variation
  • Add a pause at the top for extra time under tension

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. Because it's kneeling, the resistance is controlled by lean angle and handle length rather than the usual foot-position lever.
