Contraindications

Requires mastery of archer row and single-arm row first.

Setup

Single-handle mode, grip one handle, feet together or staggered, lean back to a moderate angle, free arm behind the back or across the chest.

Execution

  1. 1Brace hard against rotation before starting
  2. 2Pull the working elbow back, driving the shoulder blade into full retraction
  3. 3Keep hips and shoulders square — resist the urge to twist toward the pull
  4. 4Lower under complete control back to full extension

Key cues

  • No help from the free arm — hands-off or behind the back
  • Square hips throughout, brace like you're about to be punched
  • Full range every rep, chest to handle
  • Start at an easier (more upright) angle and build toward horizontal

Common faults

  • Rotating the torso to complete the rep
  • Using a wide stance as a crutch instead of true anti-rotation strength
  • Cutting the range of motion short
  • Progressing the angle before the current one is clean

Tweaks

  • Start at a near-vertical angle and build toward horizontal over weeks
  • Add a light DB in the free hand held stationary for extra core demand
  • Combine with archer row work as a complementary progression

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. The capstone pulling progression on TRX; single-limb variations are the most advanced tier — treat angle progression here exactly like weight progression on a barbell row.
