TRX Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch

A half-kneeling hip flexor stretch using a TRX handle for balance support, allowing a deeper and more stable stretch through the front of the hip than an unsupported kneeling lunge stretch — especially useful given long hours standing/operating.

Contraindications

Knee pain when kneeling — use a mat or towel for cushioning.

Setup

Set one strap to about waist height in single-handle mode. Kneel in a half-kneeling lunge position with the TRX-side knee down, holding the handle with the same-side or opposite hand for balance.

Execution

  1. 1Tuck the pelvis slightly under (posterior pelvic tilt) to isolate the hip flexor stretch
  2. 2Shift the hips forward gently until a stretch is felt in the front of the down-knee hip
  3. 3Use the TRX handle for balance, not to pull deeper into the stretch
  4. 4Hold, breathing slowly, then switch sides

Key cues

  • Posterior pelvic tilt first, then shift forward
  • Keep the torso upright, don't lean forward from the waist
  • Use light hand support only for balance
  • Breathe slowly to help the muscle release

Common faults

  • Arching the lower back instead of tucking the pelvis
  • Leaning the torso forward instead of shifting the hips
  • Using the TRX to force a deeper stretch aggressively
  • Rushing the hold without settling into the stretch

Tweaks

  • Add an overhead reach with the same-side arm for a fuller anterior chain stretch
  • Add a lateral trunk flexion away from the down leg for an oblique/hip flexor combo stretch (single-arm variant)
  • Combine with the TRX chest opener for a full anterior mobility sequence

Notes

TRX-specific. Angle = intensity: the more horizontal the body relative to the floor, the harder pressing/pulling/plank-style TRX moves become. For pulling movements (rows, face pulls), walking feet toward the anchor and leaning back further increases load. For pressing movements (push-ups, chest press), walking feet away from the anchor and standing more upright decreases load; moving feet closer to directly under the anchor point increases load. Foot position in the straps (heel vs. midfoot vs. toe) also changes leverage and load for lower-body moves. For this stretch, forward hip-shift distance (not body angle) is the intensity lever — a small forward shift is a gentle stretch, a deeper shift with the same pelvic tuck is significantly more intense.
