Single-Leg Step-Up with Knee Drive

SquatBWDBBox

Step-up where the trailing leg drives into full hip flexion (knee drive) at the top instead of landing on the box, adding a balance and hip-flexor power component reminiscent of running mechanics.

Contraindications

Balance-demanding — regress to a standard step-up if unstable; avoid for those with significant balance impairments without support nearby.

Setup

Stand facing a box roughly knee height, working foot planted fully on it.

Execution

  1. 1Drive through the working leg to stand on the box
  2. 2Simultaneously drive the trailing knee up into full hip flexion
  3. 3Briefly balance at the top on the working leg
  4. 4Lower the trailing leg back down with control
  5. 5Step back down and repeat

Key cues

  • Drive the trailing knee up like a sprint step
  • Balance briefly at the top
  • Working leg foot stays glued to the box
  • Control the eccentric on the way down
  • Keep the torso tall throughout

Common faults

  • Losing balance at the top
  • Rushing through the knee drive without control
  • Working foot shifting on the box
  • Excessive trunk lean to compensate for balance loss
  • Box too high for controlled knee drive

Tweaks

  • Add dumbbells for load once bodyweight balance is mastered
  • Hold the top position for 1-2 seconds for extra balance challenge
  • Progress to a plyometric step-up with knee drive for power

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Quadriceps, Gluteus Maximus, Hip Flexors

Secondary: Core, Calves

Notes

Frequently used in athletic performance programs to bridge strength training with sprint mechanics.
