Solo Mitt-Style - Called Combos (Imaginary Trainer)

CombatShadow

Solo adaptation of mitt work: a pre-recorded audio track or app calls out numbered combinations at random intervals, and the fighter must react and execute immediately — simulating the unpredictability and reaction demand of working mitts with a live trainer like Freddie Roach.

Contraindications

None significant.

Setup

Boxing stance, phone or speaker playing a random combo-calling audio track or app (numbered punch system: 1=jab, 2=cross, 3=lead hook, etc.).

Execution

  1. 1Stand ready in guard, waiting for the next called combo
  2. 2React immediately when a number sequence is called, executing the exact combination without hesitation
  3. 3Return to guard after each combo and reset focus for the next call
  4. 4Keep technique sharp even as calls come faster or combos get longer
  5. 5Treat missed or fumbled combos as immediate feedback, not a reason to disengage

Key cues

  • React, don't anticipate — actually wait for the call
  • Stay loose and ready between calls, not rigid
  • Execute the full combo cleanly even under time pressure
  • Reset guard immediately after every combo
  • Treat this like a live trainer is watching your reaction time

Common faults

  • Anticipating combos instead of truly reacting to the call
  • Rushing execution and sacrificing technique under the artificial time pressure
  • Losing focus between calls and being caught off guard
  • Only using a small set of go-to combos instead of the full numbered system
  • Neglecting footwork while focused entirely on hand reaction

Tweaks

  • Use an app with adjustable call speed/randomness for progressive difficulty
  • Add defensive calls (e.g., 'slip left') into the same random sequence
  • Combine with heavy bag work for a called-combo heavy bag round

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Shoulders, Core

Secondary: Cardiovascular System, Obliques

Notes

Freddie Roach's mitt sessions are built entirely on unpredictable calls that force reaction rather than memorized patterns — this solo drill replicates that principle without a partner.
