Rocking in Beast

AnimalBW

A gentle forward-and-back rocking movement performed from the Beast position, mobilizing the shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles. Often used by Original Strength and Animal Flow alike as a movement-restoration warm-up.

Sets

Reps

10-15 rocks

Rest

30s

Contraindications

Very low risk; reduce range if wrist or ankle pain is present.

Setup

Start in Beast hold, knees hovering off the floor.

Execution

  1. 1Rock the hips forward over the hands, loading the shoulders and wrists
  2. 2Rock back toward the heels, loading the ankles and hips
  3. 3Keep the back flat throughout the rock, avoiding sagging or piking
  4. 4Move slowly and rhythmically, syncing breath with the movement
  5. 5Continue rocking for the prescribed reps or time

Key cues

  • Move slow and rhythmic, this is a mobility drill not a race
  • Keep the spine neutral through the whole rock
  • Let the ankles and wrists load fully at each end range
  • Sync breathing with the rocking rhythm

Common faults

  • Rocking too fast to get any mobility benefit
  • Letting the back round or sag during the rock
  • Limiting range of motion out of caution rather than true restriction
  • Holding the breath instead of syncing it with movement

Tweaks

  • Add ankle dorsiflexion emphasis on the backward rock
  • Add wrist extension/flexion emphasis on the forward rock
  • Use as a pre-crawling or pre-flow warm-up staple

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Shoulders, Ankles, Hip Flexors

Secondary: Wrist Flexors, Core

Notes

Original Strength lists 'rocking' as one of its four foundational RESETS, alongside rolling, head nodding, and crawling.
