Contraindications
Wrist pain — regress to standard prayer stretch or reduce range.Setup
Bring both hands behind the back, pressing the backs of the hands (and ideally fingers) together, pointing downward.
Execution
- 1Press the backs of the hands together as fully as range allows
- 2Rotate the fingers to point upward for an increased stretch if tolerated
- 3Hold, breathing steadily, keeping the shoulders relaxed and down
- 4Release slowly and repeat
Key cues
- Keep the backs of the hands in contact throughout
- Relax the shoulders down, don't let them hike up from strain
- Only progress to fingers-up if pain-free
- Breathe steady through the stretch
Common faults
- Forcing the fingers-up position too early, causing pain
- Shrugging the shoulders to compensate for limited wrist range
- Losing hand contact to fake more range
- Rushing without a real hold
Tweaks
- Start with just the backs of the hands touching without fingers-up for a regression
- Add gentle shoulder rolls while holding for a combo stretch
- Progress duration as tolerance improves
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Wrist Extensors, Forearm Extensors
Secondary: Shoulder
Notes
More advanced than the standard prayer stretch — introduce gradually for tight wrists.
