Knee-to-Wall Dorsiflexion

MobilityBW

Both a mobility drill and a clinical mobility test — measures and trains ankle dorsiflexion by tracking how far the toes can be from a wall while the knee still touches it with the heel down.

Reps

Rest

20s

Contraindications

Acute ankle injury — avoid loading the joint until cleared.

Setup

Kneel in a half-kneeling position with the front foot a measured distance from a wall (start around 4-5 inches).

Execution

  1. 1Drive the front knee forward toward the wall without lifting the heel
  2. 2If the knee touches the wall easily, move the foot back and repeat
  3. 3If the heel lifts before the knee touches, move the foot closer
  4. 4Once at the limiting distance, use the position as a repeated mobilization — rock the knee toward the wall for reps

Key cues

  • Keep the heel glued to the floor throughout
  • Track the knee straight over the foot, not caving inward
  • Drive forward with intent on each rep
  • Note the distance to track progress over weeks

Common faults

  • Letting the heel lift to fake more range
  • Knee caving inward instead of tracking straight
  • Testing only once and not using it as a repeated mobilizer
  • Rushing through without real intent on each rep

Tweaks

  • Add a band around the front ankle for a mobilization overpressure
  • Progress to a loaded version (holding a light KB) for advanced ankle work
  • Perform for reps as a pre-squat warmup

Regressions

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Ankle Complex, Gastrocnemius, Soleus

Notes

One of the few mobility drills that doubles as an objective progress-tracking test.
