Kettlebell Swing (American / Overhead)

HingeKB

CrossFit variant of the kettlebell swing where the bell travels all the way overhead rather than stopping at chest height. StrongFirst and much of the hardstyle KB community consider this technically controversial and higher-risk for the shoulder.

Contraindications

CROSSFIT-CONTROVERSIAL MOVEMENT — StrongFirst and many hardstyle coaches strongly discourage this variant. Shoulder impingement risk is significant, especially with limited thoracic extension or shoulder mobility. Avoid entirely with any history of shoulder impingement, rotator cuff pathology, or lumbar hyperextension tendency. Requires passing FMS-style overhead/shoulder mobility and trunk stability screens before use.

Setup

Standard two-hand swing setup. Requires adequate shoulder flexion mobility and thoracic extension before attempting overhead travel.

Execution

  1. 1Hike and drive the hips as in a standard swing
  2. 2Allow the bell to continue its arc all the way overhead rather than stopping at chest height
  3. 3Maintain a braced core and neutral spine as the arms rise
  4. 4Avoid lumbar hyperextension to 'help' the bell overhead
  5. 5Guide the bell back down into the hinge for the next rep

Key cues

  • Only attempt if you pass shoulder mobility screens
  • Never hyperextend the low back to fake range
  • Elbows should not bend to compensate for poor mobility
  • Full-body tension throughout, not just an arm raise
  • If in doubt, stop at chest height instead (standard swing)

Common faults

  • Hyperextending the lumbar spine to get the bell overhead (major fault)
  • Bending the elbows and 'chicken-necking' the head forward
  • Internally rotating the shoulder into an impingement-prone position
  • Using this as a default swing without adequate mobility screening
  • Excess momentum causing loss of control at the top

Tweaks

  • Screen with FMS active straight leg raise, deep squat, trunk stability push-up, and shoulder mobility before programming
  • Cap height at chest/eye level instead if any mobility flags are present
  • Use lighter loads than standard swings given the added overhead demand

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Gluteus Maximus, Hamstrings, Shoulders

Secondary: Erector Spinae, Core

Notes

Flagged per StrongFirst canon as conditionally acceptable only for those meeting strict mobility/stability screening criteria (2/2 ASLR, 2 deep squat, 3 trunk stability push-up, 3/3 shoulder mobility) — otherwise considered a high-risk exercise choice.
