Jump rope performed with a heavier rope (often 1/2 lb to 2 lb) to increase forearm, shoulder, and grip demand while amplifying the conditioning stimulus of standard jump rope work.

Contraindications

Avoid with wrist tendinopathy, elbow issues (golfer's/tennis elbow), or shoulder impingement — the added rope weight significantly increases joint stress at these areas.

Setup

Use a weighted jump rope sized to normal jump rope length; stand as with basic bounce.

Execution

  1. 1Turn the heavier rope primarily with the wrists, expecting more resistance through the rotation
  2. 2Maintain the same low, small-hop jump pattern as standard rope work
  3. 3Focus on smooth, continuous rotation rather than jerky wrist snaps
  4. 4Keep shoulders relaxed despite the added rotational resistance
  5. 5Use shorter intervals initially as forearm fatigue accumulates faster

Key cues

  • Let the weight of the rope do the work, don't fight it
  • Smooth continuous turns, not jerky snaps
  • Shorten intervals compared to a standard rope
  • Keep the jump low and efficient

Common faults

  • Overgripping the handles, accelerating forearm fatigue
  • Trying to maintain standard-rope speed/cadence with a much heavier rope
  • Shoulder tension from fighting the rope's added momentum
  • Skipping proper progression from a standard-weight rope

Tweaks

  • Use for shorter intervals (15-20 sec) than a standard rope
  • Combine with standard rope work in the same session — weighted first, standard as a 'speed' finisher
  • Progress rope weight gradually (0.5 lb increments)
