Contraindications
None significant.Setup
Set an adjustable bench to roughly 45-60 degrees. Sit back with the arms hanging straight down at the sides, holding a dumbbell in each hand.
Execution
- 1Let the arms hang fully behind the torso line at the bottom for a deep stretch
- 2Curl the dumbbells up, keeping the elbows back, not drifting forward
- 3Squeeze the biceps at the top
- 4Lower under control back to the fully stretched position
Key cues
- Let the arms hang back behind the body, not just down at the sides
- Keep elbows pinned back throughout the curl
- Feel the deep stretch at the bottom of every rep
- No swinging — the incline removes most cheating leverage anyway
Common faults
- Sitting too upright, losing the behind-the-torso stretch position
- Elbows drifting forward during the curl
- Using too heavy a weight and sacrificing the stretch position
- Rushing the eccentric, missing the point of the exercise
Tweaks
- Alternate arms instead of simultaneous curling
- Steeper incline for an even greater stretch
- Add a pause at the bottom stretch position
Regressions
Muscles
Primary: Biceps Brachii (long head)
Secondary: Brachialis, Forearms
Notes
RP-style hypertrophy coaching frequently highlights the added stretch position here as a key driver of biceps growth relative to a standing curl.
