Contraindications

Higher fatigue punch — monitor form breakdown under fatigue.

Setup

Close range to the bag, staggered stance with knees bent.

Execution

  1. 1Sink the rear hip and knee slightly to load
  2. 2Drive explosively upward through the rear leg and hip
  3. 3Rotate the rear shoulder and drive the fist upward in a tight vertical line
  4. 4Keep the lead hand up throughout to guard against counters
  5. 5Retract quickly to guard

Key cues

  • Load like a squat, fire like a jump
  • Short, tight, and vertical — not a wide loop
  • Keep the lead guard hand up the entire time
  • Tuck the chin, don't lean back
  • Exhale hard on the drive upward

Common faults

  • Loading too obviously and telegraphing
  • Using arm strength instead of leg drive
  • Leaning back and exposing the chin
  • Standing too far from the bag to land it cleanly
  • Slow retraction leaving the head exposed

Tweaks

  • Pair with lead hook for uppercut-hook combo
  • Drill exclusively at the body for conditioning-style rounds
  • Combine with a level-change setup punch beforehand

Notes

Rear uppercuts are a signature finishing punch in many knockout combinations — worth dedicated technical rounds beyond just combo filler.
