Farmer Walk with Lunges (Compound)

CarryDBKB

A compound conditioning finisher alternating segments of standard farmer carry walking with segments of loaded walking lunges, holding the same implements throughout. Builds carry endurance and single-leg strength in the same continuous set.

Sets

2

Reps

3 min carry / 1 min lunge cycles

Rest

1 min

Contraindications

Select load conservatively — the lunge portion is the limiting factor, not the carry. Avoid with acute knee pain.

Setup

Deadlift two dumbbells or kettlebells to standing, ready to alternate between walking and lunging with the same load.

Execution

  1. 1Walk in a standard farmer carry for the prescribed distance or time
  2. 2Transition directly into walking lunges, still holding the implements at the sides
  3. 3Keep the torso upright through both the walk and the lunge portions
  4. 4Alternate segments for the prescribed total time (commonly 3 minutes on, 1 minute off)
  5. 5Set the implements down safely at the end of each segment as needed

Key cues

  • Stay tall through both movement patterns
  • Full range of motion on the lunges — back knee toward the floor
  • Keep the load steady, don't let it swing during transitions
  • Breathe rhythmically across both segments
  • Pick a load you can handle carrying for the entire time, not just the walk portion

Common faults

  • Choosing a load appropriate for the carry but too heavy for the lunges
  • Losing upright posture as fatigue accumulates across segments
  • Rushing the lunge transitions and shortening the range of motion
  • Letting the knee cave or overshoot past the toes during lunges
  • Neglecting to switch lead legs evenly during the lunge portion

Tweaks

  • Adjust the work-to-rest ratio (e.g., 1 minute walk / 1 minute lunge / repeat) based on conditioning goals
  • Rack the implements at the shoulders instead of the sides for an added front-rack lunge challenge
  • Reduce load and increase total time for a pure conditioning finisher

Regressions

Muscles

Primary: Quadriceps, Glutes, Forearms

Secondary: Core, Hamstrings, Calves

Notes

CONDITIONING carry: moderate load chosen for lunge tolerance, long total duration (3+ minutes per cycle). A GPP-style compound finisher rather than a max-strength movement.
