Contraindications

Not recommended for those with reflux/blood pressure concerns due to head-down position.

Setup

Secure feet under the footpads or have a spotter hold ankles. Lie on the decline bench, unrack the bar over the lower chest.

Execution

  1. 1Lower the bar to the lower-mid chest
  2. 2Aim the press toward a fixed point on the ceiling
  3. 3Keep wrists straight and neutral
  4. 4Press up and slightly back

Key cues

  • Bar path is shorter — don't rush lockout
  • Keep the wrists locked straight
  • Drive the bar to the same ceiling spot every rep
  • Exhale on the way up

Common faults

  • Sliding down the bench mid-set
  • Losing footing/anchor
  • Excessive lower back arch
  • Bar drifting toward the neck or stomach

Tweaks

  • Use dumbbells for freer path
  • Reduce decline angle if shoulder discomfort
