DB Overhead Carry

CarryDB

Two dumbbells pressed overhead and carried simultaneously, or one dumbbell for a single-arm variant. The flat dumbbell shape offers a different stability challenge than kettlebells, often easier to control since the mass is centered over the hand.

Reps

15-20m

Rest

Contraindications

Avoid with shoulder impingement or limited overhead mobility.

Setup

Press both dumbbells overhead to a locked position, palms facing in, arms beside the ears.

Execution

  1. 1Lock elbows fully, dumbbells directly over the shoulders
  2. 2Engage the core to prevent an arched lower back
  3. 3Walk with slow, controlled steps, eyes forward
  4. 4Keep the traps relaxed — don't shrug into the ears
  5. 5Bring the dumbbells down to the shoulders under control to finish

Key cues

  • Stack wrist-elbow-shoulder in a straight vertical line
  • Relax the traps, don't crank the shoulders up
  • Brace core to prevent the pelvis from tipping forward
  • Walk deliberately, don't rush
  • Keep the head neutral, don't crane the neck back

Common faults

  • Arching the lower back to keep the weights up
  • Sticking the pelvis forward (anterior pelvic tilt)
  • Shrugging the shoulders toward the ears
  • Letting the arms drift forward of the frontal plane
  • Rushing steps and losing the overhead lockout

Tweaks

  • Single-arm DB overhead carry for an added anti-lateral-flexion challenge
  • Shorter distance with heavier load for strength emphasis
  • Longer distance with lighter load for shoulder-stability endurance

Progressions

Muscles

Primary: Deltoids, Rotator Cuff, Core

Secondary: Triceps, Erector Spinae

Notes

STRENGTH carry when heavy/short; shoulder-stability CONDITIONING carry when light/long. Onnit Academy programs the overhead lunge/walk variant as a full-body finisher.
